Springtime in the Sandhills: Baby Calves, Spring Sports, and 4th Quarter Homework

Hey Everyone!

Sorry, it's been a while. It's been jam-packed the last few months! In basketball, my team placed 4th in our conference and got district runner-up. It was one of the most fun basketball seasons I had ever played in.

Then, after about a week, track practice started. This year, we have more kids than we have had in the past: 41 kids! That means that there are more people in events, which gives our team more chances to get team points. The two teams are divided into boys and girls teams. In track, the top eight places have a certain amount of points associated with them. First place gets 10 points, second gets 8, third gets 6, fourth gets 5, fifth gets 4, sixth gets 3, seventh gets 2, and eighth gets 1 point. After the whole track meet is over, all of the points are added up, and then the teams are ranked from the highest number of points to the lowest number of points. So far, we have had three track meets, two outdoor and one indoor. In our first outdoor meet, the girls team placed 6th, but in our second meet, we placed 2nd!

Along with sports, school is starting to wind down, and everyone is starting to be more than ready for summer break. With all of that excitement comes a bunch of quizzes, tests, and other homework to test what we have learned over the past year. However, as a junior, the biggest test that my class and I had to take was the ACT. We took that at the end of March, and we are all anxiously waiting to see what score we all got. Other than that, we are all just getting ready for our final summer as high schoolers to roll around. It's such a crazy feeling to have only two semesters of high school left!

Besides school and sports, another very common thing around here...calving season. Right about now, all the mamas start having their babies, which means for ranchers...waking up every 2-3 hours in the night to make sure no cows are having trouble calving, even making sure there aren't any coyotes snooping around. Calving is a time of year that is one of the most tiring but rewarding times for ranchers.

Well, I'd better go. I've gotta go to track practice so I can make sure I can get points for my team at the next meet...I also got a little bit of homework I have to do so I can go to my track meets...and then I have to go help my family with the cows at home...Then I get to go do it all over again next week...and the week after that. But, between you and me, I wouldn't trade this life for anything in the entire world

Until the next post,
Karlene
